Java upload and download plugins Print E-mail

We noticed that uploading and downloading large files using the browsers default functionality can be confusing (how much is left to upload or download?) Or your provider has a limit on the size of a file that can be uploaded. We now have a solution to these issues.

We have created two plugins for Files Together that use Java applets that keeps our cross platform priciple alive and make is easier than ever to use Files Together.

Now to see the new functionality in the browser grant user permissions to access Java upload and download plugins.

To grant permissions, login to Files Together and click on Main menu :”Tools”. A dropdown menu will be displayed on your screen. Now Click on “Users”.

After clicking on “Users”, a pop-up window will be displayed on your screen. Select the user you want to grant access to the new plugins. The ”Details” tab contents will be displayed. It will then allow you to select drives, views and plugins. To grant access to Java upload and Download plugins, in Plugins combo box, select 2 files: “jupload.php” and “jdownload.php”. Finally click on “Update” button to save your changes.

Then click the “Drive Permissions” tab. Here as per the drive access you have granted permission, check its related checkbox for “Add File” and select 2 files: “jupload.php” and “jdownload.php” from “Plugins” .Finally click on “Update” button to save your changes.

Once you grant permissions, the user will see in browser the two icons for uploading files and downloading files. The upload component button can be seen on the main toolbar.

The download menu option will appear when the user right-clicks on a file item in the file list.

For the upload functionality we took advantage of the open source JUpload component. This takes care of the limitation posed by traditional HTML upload forms. Whole directory contents can be uploaded. Drag files from your windows or linux file manager onto the applet. Files are uploaded in chunks of 500kb that gets around the issue of upload limitations.

Like the JUpload component the JDownload component downloads files in chunks of 500kb. When all the parts have been downloaded the file is reconstructed on the client in the destination folder. There is also a progress bar giving you real information on how the download is progressing.
